I Met My Younger Self for Lunch Today…

| |

Writing prompts are my absolute favorite. It’s so cathartic to see what pours out from a writing prompt. Almost as if the things you keep hidden and tucked away are safe to come out.

I also love a trend based on writing, and there is quite a trend rolling through the writer’s community on social media. Jennae Cecelia wrote a poem about her current self meeting her younger self for coffee, and the heartfelt healing that occurred through this poem inspired hundreds to write their own.

I was so excited to write mine and to see what little gems would come up through this healing lunchdate. It reminds me of a poem I wrote in my book called, “Girl on the Timeline.” I’ll include more about this at the end.

I Met My Younger Self for Lunch…

by Eileen Anne (inspired by Jennae Cecelia)

I met my younger self for lunch today…
Neither of us were on time.

She said, “Sorry I’m late…”
I said, “Thank you for waiting…”

Her voice was high-pitched– almost squeaked,
My voice was an octave lower at its peak.

She had bleach blonde hair that she dyed at 14,
I had my natural color for the first time since I was a teen.

She wore a baggy shirt she hated to hide those hips of hers,
I wore a shirt I loved finally embracing my curves.

She told how me she tried yoga, but her body was weak,
I told her I once thought the same, but I was really covered in grief.

She broke down crying, filled with limiting beliefs, ones she had been repeating all her life,
I listened, not to fix, for the first time in my life.

She told me no one ever loved her unconditionally,
I said your love, which comes from lack, will be greater than anyone can ever explain,
as you will never let anyone feel the same.

She told me she used to write— letters and stories and poems,
I smiled in knowingness of how beautiful a gift it is

She told me how others’ words had broken her,
I told her that her words would heal her.

Her dark brown eyes start to dry,
Mine, dark too, with specks of light now coming through,
We smiled as if we both knew…

A fleeting moment before she ran out the door apologizing for showing weakness
I sat for longer – I wrote, I cried
Taking a moment for me,
In deep gratitude for this release.

Your Turn to Write Healing Poetry

I encourage you to write your own version of meeting your younger self. It’s a beautiful, cathartic release. Poetry truly is so very healing. It’s a way for you to give voice to what has been held inside.

“Girl on the Timeline”

I wrote this healing poem about meeting the previous version of myself– the girl on the timeline. It’s in my book Extraordinary Inner Light, which is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and many other sites.
